Fecal Incontinence

Inability to control bowel movements, causing stool (feces) to leak unexpectedly from the rectum is known as fecal incontinence. It is also known as bowel incontinence.

Fecal incontinence is a most embarrassing and debilitating disorder. Now a days it is commonly affects in near about 27% of population. It generally occurs at old age.

The main Complaints of FI is involuntary discharge of stool and gases.

This involves numerous anatomic and physiologic factors. These include sphincter function, anorectal sensation, colonic transit, stool consistency, and neurologic as well as cognitive elements. Disruption of any number of the above can predispose a patient to incontinence.

Causes

Ø Injury to spincter

Ø nerve injury

Ø surgical trauma

Ø neuropathy

Ø long time constipation or diarrhea

Ø rectal prolapse

Ø ulcerative colitis

Ø .Age factor

Ø muscle or tissue atrophy

Symptoms

Patient may be unable to resist the urge to defecate

People are not aware of the need to pass stool.

· Constipation

· Gas and bloating

Treatment

Diet and Exercise-

Ø Avoid Vatakarhar like dry food items and bakery products

Ø Avoid fermented food items and bakery products

Ø Avoid milk products also

Ø Eat fresh and hot meal

Ø Eat light food like dailya and soaji

Ø Avoid heavy, oily and spicy food

Ø Drink plenty of water if there is constipation

Ø Regular walk is recommended

Ø Do muladharbandhexcersice

Ø Asan like pavanmuktasana, naukasanasa, vajrasans is beneficial for this.

Medicines like

Bilvavaleha,kutajarishta,dashamooljiraka,sBilvavaleha,kutajarishta,dashamooljiraka,swarna,shankhavati,sutshekharar,rasapachakayoga,sanjivanivati ,sunthighan, haritaki Ghana etc are good for digestive system ulteration For vitiated vatadosha-Bruhatvatachintamanirasa,vatagajankushrasa,vatachintamani rasa are recommended.

Panchkarma like

Basti-Anuvasana and Niruha re recommended.

Virechana- also helps in ulteration of digestive fire.
